Twenty Uses for QR Codes and Tags for Marketing

Mobile marketing has a less than solid reputation, unfortunately. It is viewed as a poor cousin to other forms of digital marketing and it is associated with downmarket products, fickle teenagers and annoying ringtones. The ‘Crazy Frog’ ringtone probably did more to damage the medium than any other product sold through mobile phones.
This is unfortunate because mobile phones are being used in different ways by people because the technology in them is increasingly sophisticated. GPS systems, high speed internet access, high resolution cameras and high storage capacity make them more useful for the people using them and, therefore, a good opportunity for marketers and advertisers to provide better services for them.
QR Codes, Microsoft Tag and Nokia ‘Point & Find’ are services which enable people to quickly connect to information such as mobile web sites, videos, MP3 files, text or telephone numbers.
To see how to use these technologies, download the guide above.

Great article! Thanks for much for sharing.
Is QR code a standard? I’ve used kaywa.com to create a QR code before. Can it be read by other applications that you recommend?
What are other barriers to adoption for QR codes?
The Lunch Pail did an interesting pro/con analysis of QR codes. Check it out, if you’re interested. http://lunchpail.knotice.com/2009/05/29/evaluating-mobile-calls-to-action-part-3/
Hi there,
Thank you for your comments.
QR codes are a standard in themselves. There are also Datamatrix codes. Kaywa Reader is a good application for reading QR codes and creating them too. There are other reader applications like i-nigma and Quickmark too. Nokia ‘Point & Find’ can read QR codes too but the codes need to be ‘tagged’ in the system already to work.
I hope that helps.

you might want to check out the GS1 standards website on mobile commerce. GS1 is working with the major cell phone manufacturers, carriers, associations, manufacturers and retailers on a standards based approach to using barcodes for multiple applications. Website below includes whitepapers, strategy documents and a video of future applications.

Will,
Is there a guideline for someone that simply wants to print a QR Code with a url in the bar code so that it can be read by a handheld device and push the user to that web site? I know encoding the url is not difficult but i have to believe their is some printed guidance on what needs to be encoded to open a browser.
Best Wishes,
Dan
We have developer a sftwsre to create jar files on the fly oncluding a qr generator in the own platform and now we are programming a component on the own jar to use the aplicarion as a qr reader too.

Hi Dan
You might want to check some of the links below for that detail. I don’t know any guidelines off hand but I expect there are some available.
